Advantages of Putting Monstera Aerial Roots in Water

Unlike regular roots, the aerial roots of monstera have xylem vessels that greatly help in the overall water absorption for the plant, improving hydration, which helps to maintain the right turgor pressure. This is important for:

  • Providing a correct level of moisture to the leaves, which is important considering the size and fenestrations that the monstera has on the foliage.
  • The right supply of water in the stems and leaves keeps the foliage crisp, which makes it look fresh for a long time. It also improves the overall firmness of the plant, which prevents it from drooping, a common problem with monsteras, due to their large foliage.

When there is proper water absorption in monsteras, this helps in osmoregulation, ensuring each plant cell receives the right amount of moisture, which is extremely important in maintaining lush foliage.

How to Put Monstera Aerial Roots in Water?

Simply take the aerial root/roots and out them in a tall and wide jar/glass filled with water. To make it more nutritious for the plant, add a 4-6 drops of balanced liquid fertilizer with every water change (once n 3-5 days). This will help the plant to get added dose of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which will result larger and more vibrant leaves.

Do note that you don’t have to put every aerial root/roots in a glass of water. A healthy monstera plant may or may not grow single or many roots. If you spot 1-2 of them, that is enough to use them for this water absorption trick.
