Philodendron Brandi Information

Philodendron brandi is a lovely houseplant with silver-green foliage that is native to Brazil. This tropical beauty is actually a climbing vine with pretty heart-shaped leaves.

It can reach 4-5 feet tall and looks absolutely gorgeous in hanging baskets and corners. Unlike most philodendrons, the stunning variegation with the combination of silver and green makes this a popular houseplant. But that’s not all. It also has air-purifying properties and has an adaptable growth habit, so you can let it cascade down or give it a moss pole or trellis to make it climb.

Propagating Philodendron Brandi

The easiest way to propagate Philodendron brandi is in water. All you need is a healthy stem with a few leaves. You can get it from a friend or a garden center for free, too.

Let it callous for a day or two, then place it in a jar or glass filled with fresh water so that at least one node is submerged. Keep the jar in bright, indirect light on a windowsill and wait. In about 3-4 weeks, you’ll see that it has developed roots and once they reach about two inches long, you can transplant it in a pot.

Light

Philodendron brandi thrives in bright, indirect light, so keep it dappled sunlight below a tree’s canopy rather than the harsh rays on a windowsill. But if you’re growing it indoors, make sure there’s a curtain on the window.

Soil

Here’s a simple soil recipe for growing a Philodendron brandi that will make sure it thrives for a long time.

  • 2 parts potting mix for the base structure
  • 1 part perlite for drainage and aeration
  • 1 part orchid bark for air pockets

Mix all of these in a pot and then use it as the potting medium for your plant.

Water

You’ll need to water it regularly, but not much. Just water it when the top inch of the soil dries out. And remember, it’s better to be underwater than overwater.

Temperature

As for the temperature, this philodendron needs a warm and humid environment, which is about 70°F and 95°F (21°C and 35°C).

Fertilizer

You can give it a slow-release 15-5-10 fertilizer during the spring and summer seasons. But dilute the feed to 1/2 of its strength, and do not feed it to the plant more than once in 5-7 weeks.

Pests and Diseases

Philodendron brandi can be infected with spider mites and mealybugs so if you see these, use a neem oil spray on them–it will make sure they don’t come back.

Never overwater the plant because it can lead to root rot and leaf spot diseases.
