Many people dream of having their own house someday. They want to plan everything themselves. Ideally, the house would be spacious, and if it also has a garden, that would be a dream come true.
However, houses are expensive. Not everyone can afford such luxury.
A simple farmer, who just turned twenty-three, didn’t want to build a career like his peers. He dreamed of having his own house, so he decided to build it himself.
Dane says that paying off a mortgage would take many years because his income isn’t very high. He never wanted to take on debt. But he also couldn’t buy a house without a loan; he would have to save money for almost his entire life.
So, Dane decided to build the house himself. He had never done anything like this before, so he asked his father, a professional carpenter, for help. His father gave him all the support he could, and Dane went ahead with the plan.
Besides his father, his friends also helped him. Without them, the construction would have taken much longer. Dane had a very small budget, so he had to use discounted materials.
He paid only thirty dollars for the windows, and the stove was given to him for free. The construction took about a year. The result was a very nice, though small, house with everything needed for living.
Living in this kind of house doesn’t require much money. The house is heated by the stove, and Dane cooks on a gas stove. He didn’t install electricity, using a kerosene lamp instead. The only thing connecting him to civilization is his mobile phone, which has internet access.
Dane set up his own garden, where he grows different vegetables and fruits. This small piece of land was a gift from his neighbor. In the future, Dane plans to start raising chickens.
“I’ve always loved peace and quiet. I can’t imagine how people live in noisy cities. This quiet place suits me perfectly. My parents didn’t understand my choice at first, but after visiting me a few times, they calmed down. They are happy that I’m happy. That’s what matters most to them. They don’t judge me for my choice.”
Dane’s new home is very simple, but he has everything he needs to live a normal life. He lacks nothing and is completely satisfied.
“My friends thought I was crazy for choosing this way of life. They can’t imagine life without electricity and TV. But I’m never bored; I always have something to do without these ‘comforts.’ I’ll never understand people who don’t know how to entertain themselves.”
Dane has already made friends with many local farmers, and he spends a lot of time with his new friends.
He doesn’t have a girlfriend yet. Dane understands that many people wouldn’t want to live in such conditions. If needed, he plans to build a bigger house. Buying a ready-made home isn’t an option because it’s still too expensive for Dane. Even for a small cottage, it would cost over one hundred and eighty thousand dollars. Why spend so much? Dane’s opinion on this matter hasn’t changed.
The small house in the middle of nowhere turned out to be quite unusual. But can you really judge someone who is completely happy with this kind of life? The most important thing is that the person living there feels comfortable. Other people’s opinions don’t matter.
